Podcasts Away!

So sorry if the posts haven’t been as regular lately; in addition to a fair amount of change in life, my good friend That Geek Chick and I have started a podcast that was just picked up by iTunes this week! Getting that approval in so quickly was a real highpoint for me; and have such a feeling of ‘this is what turns it around’. Not like podcasting will be the catalyst to better fame and furtune. No, fuck that, I don’t care about it. It could however be that thing that makes me feel happy about my job and in a creative way for the first time in a long time (which I think is what I was chasing in Hollywood more than anything anyway). I’m working with the same toys and tools as video editing; but I get to pick my own content and creation and have zero producers without any of those skills telling me I’m “doing it wrong”.

I had such a girly Squee moment in that single e-mail! We really do love recording it and hope you guys can come on a little ride with us; what does it cost besides a half hour of your time you’d have spent in the car anyway? Geek Girl, Nerd Boy explores the latest in everything Geek. Movies, TV, Comics, Cons, Games, and life in general are discussed from both sides of the gender fence with hosts Erin Smith & Thom Obarski. I’m VERY proud of the format and content of theses two episodes; won’t you please help us by downloading, rating, reviewing, sharing; whatever you can! Thank you so much, this whole experiment has been a great ride thus far.

Comic-Con Friday 2011 Redux

It greatly saddens my heart to be missing the Mecca of the nerd world, the zenith where pop and geek culture meet for one week to decide what all will be taken back to camp, broken out to analyze, and declare based on these teasers and first glances just what were going to be excited for for an entire year; decided over the course of a long weekend. The people, the energy, the hopes and dreams of a generation are packed into 2 suitcases and a train ticket to really put your heart out there and make yourself or your film, or company, or whatever thrive or fail. It is the biggest reveals to the media and pop culture what the fans will stand behind; and just what we’ve decided to let die. For one weekend it puts the power into the hands of the consumer.

However, as I said, I will not be making it for the first time in years due to a body relocation issue (ie I cant physically be there due to no money). So rather than sit around and me mopey that Thom isn’t invited this year, Ive decided to stick around and analyze what flopped and what stuck from last year; enjoy!

Comic-Con 2011 was a whirlwind of activity and panels and yet very chill. Just as many people this year, but I think organizers were really on top of scheduling big panels at the same time so people had to make a choice but could actually get in to what they really wanted to see. This year was especially meaningful as my dad was in town and joined me for my last day at the con. Let me take you on a little trip of my convention: what I saw, what secrets were dropped, and just what might be worth checking out in the coming months!

Spoilers! I promise not to ruin Kevin Smiths new series

Yesterday indie rockstar Kevin Smith launched his new movie review series, Spoilers. Par for the course, Smith never does anything according to convention. This is not a regular show, you wont find it on your tv. Rather, as traditional tv is further diluted by hundreds of channels and more younger viewers switching to online viewing, this show is being broadcast exclusively on Hulu, for free! Nor is Spoilers a tradition movie review show. Instead of having two stuffy old guys clinically dissecting film; each week, the show will take a group of everyday Joes to the theatre to see a new release. For the inaugural episode, ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Guns’ Kev & the Spoilers review Snow White and the Huntsman; with the general consensus being that it’s a gorgeously shot entertaining summer movie but is lacking in character development and that Kristen Stewart’s acting is underwhelming and at times even distracting. One of the Spoilers hit the nail on the head saying, “She was like a prop, everyone else just acted around her.” So I guess we get more reprise of her razor sharp deer in the headlights method of acting made famous in Twilight. “She always looks like she’s about to say something important, and then they cut away; I’m like wait wait wait!”

What I really like about this show is the unbiased reviewers mixed in with Kevin’s commentary. You get opinions ranging from rating the film for its mere entertainment popcorn value up to it’s overall film worthiness, all laced with Kev’s patented brand of comedy.

As most of you know, Friday was Geek pride day; and man was there some geek love in the air! As a follow up to that I would like to carry on the love with Nerd Appreciation day! For this I was going to just put together a gallery of some great geek girls with superhero body paint; but instead let me feed your poindexter passions with some new material. (If you ask nice I’ll post the gallery anyway ) Either way know that I think you’re awesome for reading and I appreciate you!

In addition to all the wonderful creators of the content that we crave that have nabbed a spot on the wall over in my People and Likes sections; do yourself a favor and check out some other inspired opinions on the interwebs.
