Happy New Year friends!

I’m not going to beat around the bush, 2012 was rough; really rough. While some really cool shit happened for Pure Nerd Nip (seeing the Tumbler, doing press for Philly Comic-Con, starting a podcast), personally it was a mess. My New Years was nothing special, but I did spend part of the day re-watching The Dark Knight Rises. Amidst all the action was a really human moment that, days later, still sticks with me.

iTunes Icon - 7

So sorry if the posts haven’t been as regular lately; in addition to a fair amount of change in life, my good friend That Geek Chick and I have started a podcast that was just picked up by iTunes this week! Getting that approval in so quickly was a real highpoint for me; and have such a feeling of ‘this is what turns it around’. Not like podcasting will be the catalyst to better fame and furtune. No, fuck that, I don’t care about it. It could however be that thing that makes me feel happy about my job and in a creative way for the first time in a long time (which I think is what I was chasing in Hollywood more than anything anyway). I’m working with the same toys and tools as video editing; but I get to pick my own content and creation and have zero producers without any of those skills telling me I’m “doing it wrong”.

I had such a girly Squee moment in that single e-mail! We really do love recording it and hope you guys can come on a little ride with us; what does it cost besides a half hour of your time you’d have spent in the car anyway? Geek Girl, Nerd Boy explores the latest in everything Geek. Movies, TV, Comics, Cons, Games, and life in general are discussed from both sides of the gender fence with hosts Erin Smith & Thom Obarski. I’m VERY proud of the format and content of theses two episodes; won’t you please help us by downloading, rating, reviewing, sharing; whatever you can! Thank you so much, this whole experiment has been a great ride thus far.

Moving on to part two of Thom being sad about missing Comic-Con and reviewing last years trip post-hostumasly. For Fridays Redux click Here!

July 2011
When we last left off we had wrapped up Friday sometime around 2am outside the house of blues. Saturday dawns and I meet up with my dad at the train station and head back to the floor to pick up some swag that I saw going around. The crowds on Saturday were even worse than Fridays; my dad was absolutely blown away; missing more than one turn behind me because he was busy looking over his shoulder at some half naked floor model dressed up as a _________ trying to sell him something. But man, the freebies this year were pretty awesome if I do say so myself! DC was giving out a bunch of comics as well as a casino chip to Wayne Casino. There was a Twilight/3 Musketeer booth giving away twilight lightbulbs (not lit; b/c this last film is sooooo dark ‘bah’) and mini foam sponge like swords for three musketeers. Sony Online Entertainment was giving away some pretty sweet DCU Online lanyards and Joker masks. WB was giving away full sized nerf swords in the style of Thundercats Sword of Omens; didn’t even get close to one of those; you can find ‘em on ebay right now starting at $5.

2012 Redux: Three Musketeers was pretty aweful and Twilight continued to have Kristen Stewart; so you didn’t miss much there.

It greatly saddens my heart to be missing the Mecca of the nerd world, the zenith where pop and geek culture meet for one week to decide what all will be taken back to camp, broken out to analyze, and declare based on these teasers and first glances just what were going to be excited for for an entire year; decided over the course of a long weekend. The people, the energy, the hopes and dreams of a generation are packed into 2 suitcases and a train ticket to really put your heart out there and make yourself or your film, or company, or whatever thrive or fail. It is the biggest reveals to the media and pop culture what the fans will stand behind; and just what we’ve decided to let die. For one weekend it puts the power into the hands of the consumer.

However, as I said, I will not be making it for the first time in years due to a body relocation issue (ie I cant physically be there due to no money). So rather than sit around and me mopey that Thom isn’t invited this year, Ive decided to stick around and analyze what flopped and what stuck from last year; enjoy!

July 2011
Comic-Con 2011 was a whirlwind of activity and panels and yet very chill. Just as many people this year, but I think organizers were really on top of scheduling big panels at the same time so people had to make a choice but could actually get in to what they really wanted to see. This year was especially meaningful as my dad was in town and joined me for my last day at the con. Let me take you on a little trip of my convention: what I saw, what secrets were dropped, and just what might be worth checking out in the coming months!

data-center-servers-t001

After just 2 short months I’m very pleased to announce that this site has outgrown both my ambitions and what is possible on the free servers at WordPress. Unfortunately hosting a dedicated server is not in my budget at this time. Enter the awesome That Geek Chick, Erin Smith; who has selflessly offered to host us! I urge you all to give her a visit and a follow as she is no only a clever and original writer, but I’m not sure how much longer there would be a nerd nip without a geek chick!
