Fifteen months ago at SDCC 2011 some of the most recognizable names in comics sat down at the same table and announced that Legendary Pictures, the studio that brought us 300, Batman Begins, and Inception (as well as a bunch of less memorable comic/sci-fi films, but not to dwell) was starting a print division. From writer Matt Wagner, “Legendary Comics is the first attempt by a Hollywood production house to acknowledge and celebrate the sibling affinity between these two dramatic art forms from the ground floor up.” Legendary Comics would be helmed by former DC editor Bob Schreck, their first printing would be a Frank Miller property, and their first original series a noir-esque tale based around a supernatural bounty hunter. Sadly, the result thus far has been far less The Dark Knight and way more Sucker Punch.

Ipod cover

Paired with every iPhone, iPod, iThingy et all you’ll find that signature look of Apple tech: the white earbud. Those singularly branded white cords have gone thru many iterations over the years, from the terrible to not so terrible. Along with bigger screens, better cameras and higher resolutions, the latest generation of iDevices are coming pre-packaged with some new default listening technology. However, after three years in R&D I can only draw 2 conclusions:
1. Apple does not assume anyone listens in ideal listening conditions and
2. They similarly believe no-one listens to music containing both overdriven guitars and an unfiltered snare drum anymore.

This weekend I saw Looper.
It is the kind of movie that accomplishes a lot more with its mythology than what it has been billed as.
It’s the type of movie that makes me want to go back to making movies.
Most importantly, it’s so elegantly powerful in its simplicity.

Time travel is an oft overused and panned theatrical device (see Butterfly Effect or Star Trek: Generations); but when done correctly can be the source for some reality questioning and mind boggling science fiction. With that in mind I give you my 5 favorite time travel movies.

Moving on to part two of Thom being sad about missing Comic-Con and reviewing last years trip post-hostumasly. For Fridays Redux click Here!

July 2011
When we last left off we had wrapped up Friday sometime around 2am outside the house of blues. Saturday dawns and I meet up with my dad at the train station and head back to the floor to pick up some swag that I saw going around. The crowds on Saturday were even worse than Fridays; my dad was absolutely blown away; missing more than one turn behind me because he was busy looking over his shoulder at some half naked floor model dressed up as a _________ trying to sell him something. But man, the freebies this year were pretty awesome if I do say so myself! DC was giving out a bunch of comics as well as a casino chip to Wayne Casino. There was a Twilight/3 Musketeer booth giving away twilight lightbulbs (not lit; b/c this last film is sooooo dark ‘bah’) and mini foam sponge like swords for three musketeers. Sony Online Entertainment was giving away some pretty sweet DCU Online lanyards and Joker masks. WB was giving away full sized nerf swords in the style of Thundercats Sword of Omens; didn’t even get close to one of those; you can find ‘em on ebay right now starting at $5.

2012 Redux: Three Musketeers was pretty aweful and Twilight continued to have Kristen Stewart; so you didn’t miss much there.

Welcome back to Comic-Con week! Being the center of the geek yearly calendar, you can taste the excitement in the air.  All the big reveals, the new content, meeting your favorite creators, and of course getting to see your favorite characters brought to life by the marvelous people who take part in costume play! Cosplay, as it’s now come to be known, has grown in popularity over the years, once being reserved for the die hard fan or booth stand trying to sell something. These days however the casual fan now has the materials and outlet to put together their own living embodiment of their favorite characters from anime, video games, and big blockbuster movies.  Here to talk with us today on some of the do’s and don’ts and the future of cosplaying is the actress, the model, the woman behind the mask: Ms. Kimberly Moore!

Pure Nerd Nip: Kimberly, why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself and how life led to you dressing up as batman villains at comic book conventions?
Kimberly Moore: I am an actress, model, singer and dancer and have been cosplaying since 2009. I have cosplayed Luigi, Tails, Harley Quinn, Black Cat, Leeloo, American Dream, Ms. Marvel, Jessica Rabbit, TDRK Catwoman and Sue Storm. When I cosplay I like to put my own costumes together and make my own version of the character or make an exact costume of the character rather than buy a store bought costume. I love going to conventions and I try to go to as many as I can. Acting and modeling is my life, it makes me very happy and I want to share it with the whole world!
